9 Signs Your Home Needs an Electrical Safety Inspection

3. Warm or Discolored Outlets and Switches
An outlet or switch plate that feels warm to the touch, has a slight burning smell, or shows scorch marks or discoloration is a warning sign that shouldn’t be ignored. This can indicate loose wiring, an overloaded circuit, or a failing connection, all of which carry fire risk.
4. Buzzing or Crackling Sounds
Electrical systems should be silent. If you hear buzzing, crackling, or humming from outlets, switches, or your electrical panel, that’s a sign of a loose connection or arcing, both of which are fire hazards and worth having checked right away.

These panels were built for a different era of electrical demand and may not handle today’s loads safely.
7. Two-Prong Outlets Throughout the House
Homes wired before the 1960s often still have ungrounded two-prong outlets. Beyond the inconvenience of not being able to plug in modern three-prong devices safely, a lack of grounding is a real safety gap, particularly for larger appliances and electronics.
8. Recent Renovations, Additions, or Appliance Upgrades
Any time you’ve added a room, finished a basement, or installed a higher-demand appliance (a hot tub, EV charger, or additional A/C unit, for example), it’s worth confirming your electrical system can actually support the added load. Problems here often don’t show up immediately; they show up months or years later as gradual wear on an overburdened system.
9. You Don’t Know the Age or History of Your Wiring
If you bought an older home and aren’t sure when the electrical system was last updated, that uncertainty is itself a reason for an inspection. Aluminum wiring (common in homes built in the 1960s and 70s), knob-and-tube wiring (common in homes built before the 1950s), and undocumented DIY work from previous owners are all things worth knowing about before they become a problem.
